Overview
The Japanese science fiction thriller drama Alice in Borderland is based on Haro Aso’s manga of the same name. Kento Yamazaki and Tao Tsuchiya play the main characters in the Shinsuke Sato-directed series, who are stranded in an abandoned Tokyo and have to play dangerous games in order to survive. Playing cards represent the nature and difficulty of each game, and if they don’t renew their “visas,” they will be immediately executed by lethal lasers that descend from the sky.
Production and Filming
In July 2019, the first season’s production was formally confirmed, and the first season’s filming took place from August to December of the same year. Several areas of Shibuya as well as a painstakingly constructed green screen recreation of the famous Shibuya Crossing served as important filming sites. International cooperation produced the visual effects, which included work from Singaporean, American, and Indian teams in addition to Japan’s Digital Frontier. Yutaka Yamada, who has previously worked with Sato, provided the music for the series.
